Over time things are meant to get better. As humans we are taught to learn from our mistakes and set a better example for the next generation. With this at hand how come statistics show the bettering of tomorrow becoming worse year by year? Carelessness, we Americans are careless. In the year 2000 there were about 84 pregnancies per 1,000 teens. That means there were 821,810 teen pregnancies among the United States of America.
Teen mothers are statistically shown to be less likely to finish high school and/or college and over 80% of the unwed mothers end up with welfare. Babies born to teen mothers are also at a disadvantage. Most of them don’t have the chance to meet their birth father due to one night stands and breakups. Considering that, the child won’t have a stable home to eat, sleep and grow within.
Now in the year 2010 more and more teens are becoming pregnant. Although everyone is trying to prevent it there are mixed signals that seem as if they’re encouraging it. For instance Glee and The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which are giving of false ideas. They imply it’s easy to be a teen mom and you can balance having a child, school and a healthy social life. In reality you’re lucky if you can juggle school work and a healthy baby, but all three is just illogical. On the flip side, reality shows such as Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant portray real life struggles with being a pregnant teen.
Being 14, the best thing I can do to prevent teens from making a mistake that will permanently change their lives is to post this and hope it changes the way those teens make decisions.
